Don Essinger

I’m just going to talk about a few times here at WSU where it was just too cold for my liking. It was the winter of 1964, and for the first time ever I was unable to start my Volkswagen bug because it was just too cold on campus, I think it was negative 15 degrees or something ridiculous like that. Another memory of mine, this one is more funny I guess but at the time it was pretty frustrating. My roommates and I had accidentally fallen asleep with the windows open. Unfortunately, it had snowed an excessive amount that night so I ended up waking up to snow piled on top of me and was freezing.

Were you in a fraternity here at WSU? Yes I was, I was in Theta Zi. One of my favorite memories was when me and some of my brothers took my ’56 black ford convertible to Moscow, Idaho because we had worn the top out from putting it up and down so much. Rain, snow, or sun, we loved having the top down when were driving around in that car and I loved it.

I want my story to be short, sweet, and to the point so here it is. I met my husband here at Washington State University, but it’s not as simple as you may think. We actually dating each other here at WSU for a little bit, but things didn’t really work out so we ended up splitting up, graduating, and finding other people. We both went off to marry other individuals but funny thing, neither of our marriages with those people worked out. We reunited through the alumni directory in the year of 1988, dated, and married in 1990. We’ve been together for 25 years as of last month (September).

I was the women’s editor of Daily Evergreen. I wrote a column called “Under Polly’s Bonnet,” it was a column all about women’s fashion that took place on campus. During this time the Evergreen office was in the basement of the CUB.
